About the Program

The National Institute for Newman Studies offers a Visiting Scholars Program for scholars who wish to devote a period of research and writing — from 2 to 8 weeks — in the field of Newman Studies. The program is intended not only for senior scholars and those well-acquainted with Newman, but also for emerging Newman scholars and other researchers who seek to connect their research in some meaningful way with Newman's thought, context, and/or legacy.

Admitted candidates who successfully complete all program requirements receive a stipend of $1,500 in a lump sum, plus lodging at the Institute. Scholars residing forty miles or more from Pittsburgh may request accommodations in one of the residential suites at NINS, and scholars traveling from outside North America may request a $500 travel grant in addition to the stipend.

Advanced M.A. and Ph.D. students are also encouraged to apply: students pursuing a degree with an M.A. thesis or Ph.D. dissertation related to Newman can apply — with a letter of recommendation from a mentor or major professor — for a lodging-only grant of up to two weeks. Such residential stays do not include article-submission requirements or lead to scholar stipends.

How to Apply

  1. Complete the online application form.
  2. Attach a CV with a complete list of publications.
  3. Arrange for two letters of recommendation to be sent directly to NINS via the website upload (see your confirmation email for the link to give your references).
  4. Attach a research proposal with a provisional, detailed timeline.

Letters of Recommendation

Two letters of recommendation are required. The letters must be written on letterhead, signed, scanned, and uploaded by your references to the NINS website via the link provided in your confirmation email. References should address your proposal as well as your independent research, writing skills, motivation, success in completing projects, and ability to work well with colleagues.

Research Proposal

Your proposal (one single Word or PDF file) must include:

  • A 100-word abstract
  • A research project of up to 1,500 words, double-spaced and typed, indicating the area of Newman Studies you would pursue
  • A detailed bibliography related to the proposal
  • A provisional work schedule, briefly describing each research phase (before, during, and — if applicable — after the scholarship period)

Completion Requirements

At the conclusion of the residential stay, participants complete an exit interview with the Director and submit an Exit Evaluation Form and Narrative Report detailing progress and outcomes. To qualify for the stipend, scholars must — within thirty days of completing their residency — submit a non-simultaneous, original academic article for publication in the Newman Studies Journal, deemed peer-review ready by the NINS editorial staff at its sole discretion. All materials should be submitted together as Word/PDF documents in a single email to admin@newmanstudies.org.

After completing the Visiting Scholars Program, candidates are eligible to re-apply only once.
